The Azerbaijani city of Nakhichevan belonged to different empires at different times, but its name is interpreted from the Kartvelian point of view toponymically and morpheme-by-morpheme, that is, flawlessly and absolutely. As was already the case in a number of toponyms, the name contains the Kartvelian trademark toponymic construction "na + <root> + evi", translated as "where <root> used to be". Thus, "nakhichevi" is "the place where khichi used to be". The word "khichi" (ხიáƒáƒ˜) in Georgian means "gravel", "small stones" or "ruined rock".
That is, "nakhichevi" is "where there used to be a pile of small stones" or "the former site of a ruined rock". And “-ani” is an adjective suffix.- Home
