On Ptolemy's map, the tribe "Nemeti" is located on the Rhine. The toponym, which is a Kartvelian construction "land of nemi", reveals the Kartvelian origin of the Slavic word "Nemets" meaning ""German". The widespread "official" etymology of this word as meaning of "mute" can no longer be considered. Meanwhile in the Laz dictionary of Tandilava the word "nemi" (ნემი) has the same meaning as the Georgian "nami" - "moisture". Hence, "Nemeti", "damp land".
