КУЧА/KUTXA

The search of a possible Kartvelian origin for the Basque word "kutxa" (from ქუჩა [kucha], "street" in Georgian) produced no confirmation (although the word "kutxa" was written on a San Sebastian bus). But the Russian word "куча" ("heap") suddenly swooped in. In Basque "kutxa" means "box", "cash register", as well as "mill embankment", which, in fact, is "heap". Interestingly, there is no separate word ქუჩა [kucha] in the sense of "heap" in Georgian dictionary, but there is "kucheba" in the meaning of "to gather in a heap, to pile up"...

  1. There is another Georgian word ყუთი (k'ut'i), which actually means "box"
