TARTARUS

The root of the word "Tartarus" - "Tartar" - is a Svan plural suffix for the root "tart-" and can be interpreted as "place of tart". The word "tarti" is translated from Georgian as "stellate sturgeon". And at the mouth of the Po River, where the ancient city of Tartarus was located, sturgeon is not only present, but even has its own local Adriatic name: Acipenser naccarii. So, Tartarus, without a doubt, was a "sturgeon place" like other ancient toponyms with the same root. See also Tartess, Tartaria, Tartar Strait.
