SAMOTHRACE

It is unlikely that anyone doubts the fact that the name of the island [samotraki] in the Aegean Sea is related to Trakia (that would be a way better render of what is know as "Thrace" in English). The only problem is what to do with the prefix "Samo-". In fact, these are two prefixes. The prefix "mo-" has a personifying character, with the help of which they designated a person who had the root of the word as their characteristic. If the word "traki" is translated from Kartvelian as "ass", then "motraki" is "fat-assed". You can read about how fat-assed the Thracians were in the corresponding article of our encyclopedia of Kartvelian toponyms of the World. And the prefix "Sa-", in turn, indicates the country where such people lived. That is, "Samotraki" is "the land of the fat-assed". There is no doubt that in ancient times this word was used to refer to all of Thrace, and not just the island.
