AZAGARIUZ

At the place where the Dnipro turns sharply from west to south, and where the city of Dnipro is located today, on Ptolemy's map in the second century, the city of Azagariuz was located. A close look allows to discern the Kartvelian origin of this toponym. The final "-uz" is the ending of the nominative case of nouns in the Proto-Germanic language. Translated into the historical language, this ending could have come to the name either from the Goths or from their predecessors, the Aesir. And the initial "A-" is the Phoenician definite article (actually, the Old Kartvelian one too).

Thus, the root of the word remains "zagari", which in the Svan language means "mountain" and coincides with the name of a village in Svaneti. The same root is present in the name of the Croatian capital - Zagreb. 60It is difficult to say whether the hills on which Dnipro stands today can be called mountains. The relief could have changed over the millennia. And the highest point of Dnipro - 188 meters - is not that low.
