OHIO

The state of Ohio originally derives its name from the Ohio River. And it’s not really "Ohio"—it’s "Ohayo," as the spelling suggests.

In Margalian, the word "haya" means "sedge"—a type of grass. Thus, "Ohayo" translates to "the place where sedge grows."

Sedge naturally grows along the riverbanks, reinforcing the connection. Reference: USDA Forest Service. Riparian Vegetation Along U.S. Rivers (2022).
