TIPULA

In Basque, "onion" is "tipula". Let's assume (we have a full right for that) that this is a Kartvelian adjective "tipuli". Then you need to look for the root "tip-".

Chanturia's dictionary does not show anything, but in such a case it is always helpful to use the Megrelian dictionary of Otara Kajaia. The root "tip-" (თიფ-) is very popular there and corresponds to the Georgian roots "tib-" and "tiv-" in such words as "tibva" (mowing) or "tiva" (hay). And the word "tifu" (თიფუ), for example, simply means "grass".

Additionally, Kajaia shows თიფი as "English weed" - a herbaceous plant. Thus, we may conclude, that "tipuli" is the adjective "herbaceous", which is what onion is indeed, an herbaceous plant.
