PONIKVA

The name of the Ponikva River in the Lviv region has two possible explanations. It either consists of two Georgian roots: "pony" (ფონი) - "ford" and "kva" (ქვა) - "stone". Note that the river flows past the city of Brodi (fords). The second interpretation would imply "-ava" being the Megrelian masdar ending added to some "ponik-" root, which has vague traces within the Kartvelian family (despite including the Laz "-ik" suffix): ფონი --> ფონიკი --> ფონიკუა.
