They say that this is a demon from Germanic folklore, and then offer an extensive etymology. But if we look at the name from the standpoint of Kartvelian languages, then we get it split into "mephes topheli". And this is exactly "weapon of the Lord" in Georgian, because the word "mep(he)" (მეფე, king), as is known, comes from "meup(h)e" (მეუფე) - "Lord". While თოფი is a well-known "weapon", and თოფელა in Chanturia's dictionary mean "children's pistol".
