The official etymologists do not argue with the fact that the true basis of the name is "vital-", and point to the "Vitalii" tribe as the source of the name. Next, they try to link this word to the Latin "vitulus" - "calf".
First of all, the addition of the starting "v-" is purely Kartvelian (more precisely, Svan) trait, which was later borrowed by Ukrainians. Otahi-votah, ojahi-vojah, etc.
And if it is Kartvelian, then we should look for the root "vitul-" in the Megrelian dictionary. There we find it in the form of the adjective "vituli" (ვითული), originating from the word ვით in the meaning "ten" and translated as "tenth", "decimal", "tenfold", etc. It is most likely a confederation of some ten tribes of south-western Italy.
