МАЧВА

The region called Macva is a forest-steppe to the south of Belgrade. It was once the richest land in Serbia, full of various species of animals. The name attracts attention because the root "mac-" is equally popular in the names of Slavic and Georgian animals: "macka" (cat, bear and even goat) among the Slavs and "machvi" (badger) and "machkatela" (bat) among the Georgians. Actually, "Machva" in Georgian would already be enough to mean a "bagder land".
