МАЙДАН

In Georgian მოედანი [moedani] means "square" too. This word is not a borrowing from the Turkic language, contrary to popular belief. It comes from the verb "მოედება" [moedeba], meaning "to spread over a surface, area". Since the prefix "mo-" indicates the direction of movement, the original root should be considered the verb "ედება" [edeba], translated as "to occupy space". From this it is easy to conclude that "moedani" (formed with the adjective suffix "-ani", which later turned into a noun) is precisely the object of the action of the verbs "edeba" and "moedeba", namely what fills the action of "edeba" or what the action of "edeba" spreads onto. That is, the area. So, the extremely popular Ukrainian word "maidan" is of purely Georgian origin.
