ALPS

Unexpectedly, the common Kartvelian root "lub" can be also seen in such a toponym as "Alps". The root in this word was given by the Roman goddess Lubitina, who is sometimes identified with the Etruscan goddess Alpanu. The root "lp", as in other similar words, is distinguished by separating the definite article. How "lb" turns into "lub" has already been described in detail. The correspondence "lp-lb" also does not raise any doubts, since "p" and "b" are practically the same consonant sound of varying degrees of sonority. In addition, traditional etymology itself does not object to the interpretation of "p" in the word "Alps" as "b", suggesting the related word "alba".
