ZAGREB

Believe it or not, but "Zagrebi" is a purely Georgian word. The "-eb" ending is too much to ignore for it is a modern Georgian plural suffix. The root "zagr" thus is present in the Svan language in the form of "zagari", meaning "mountain" or "pass", and also in the form of the village of Zagari in the mountainous Svaneti.

Hence "zag(a)rebi" means "mountains" (Kartvelian tend to skip vowels to keep 4-syllable words 3-syllable). The capital of Croatia really stands on three mountains - Kaptol, Gradec and Medvenica. The same root seems to be present in the ancient name of Dnipro city - Azagarius.
