PEUCETII

Strabo places in Apulia a tribe with the name "Peucetii", which contains the Kartvelian toponymic suffix "-eti". The root, in this case, is "peuc". This is the same root as in the word "peucini", which can be found on Ptolemy's maps in Ukraine not only as a separate tribe (there is even such a Ukrainian surname "Pevchin"), but also in the name of the "Peucin Mountains". These seem to be none other than the Pechenegs, whose root of the name is also "pe(u)ch". Some historians call this same people by the word "pevki", deriving the name from the root of the Greek "peuk" - "pine". Most likely, the Pechenegs are indeed a “pine people” (there are a lot of pine trees in the Danube Delta, sacred to the Pechenegs/Peucini/Peuki, where the capital of this people was located on an island that is unlikely to have survived to this day), since in the Kartvelian language “pine” is also “pichvi”. We, through the name “Peuchetii”, can record the presence of the Pechenegs in Italy, who had not been noticed there before.

And since the Pechenegs seem to be kin to the Scythians, compare this to another Italian toponym - Sascupo.

As for the Peuk island, it was finally localized by our project as the Plateau Babadag. The island existed when the sea level was 120 meters higher.
