It is believed that the surname "Mgerian" comes from the Armenian name "Mger", which Armenians try to interpret unconvincingly as "sunny" without any evidence. In the Kartvelian interpretation, the surname turns into the impeccable adjective "mgeriani", which is formed from the noun "mgeri", which in the Laz language means "wolf". Thus, "Mgeriani" is "of wolf".
